Print Margins Guide

Learn how margins and safe areas keep text and important graphics away from trim and printer limits.

Margins protect important content

Margins are the empty or safe space inside the page edge. They help keep text, logos, and important artwork from being cut off or too close to the edge.

For home printing, margins also help avoid printer non-printable edge areas.

Margin, safe area, and bleed

These terms are related, but they are not the same.

Frequently asked questions

How much margin should I use?

It depends on the item. Many simple documents use at least 0.25 to 0.5 inches, while print shops may provide exact safe area rules.

Can a printer print to the edge?

Some printers can, but many cannot. Use the printable area calculator if your printer has non-printable edges.
